Sand Sculptures in Hundested - part 1

The Great Danes:
History, fiction and myths

The International Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival began in 2012. 
The fifth festival runs from 5 May to 18 September 2016.
This post and the following post show most of the sculptures which are on display.

This poster, which is placed near the entrance to the exhibition area, presents the theme of the current festival: "The Great Danes: History, fiction and myths."

The poster also mentions a few basic facts about the festival:

How much sand was used for the sculptures? 900 tons
What is the size of the exhibition area? 1,800 square meters
How many scultures are on display? 28
Who created them? eleven artists from five different countries


This sign shows the way to the entrance.


The Round Tower of Copenhagen and King Christian IV, the man who had it built.
Christian IV (born 1577) was king of Denmark 1588-1648.
This sculpture is made by Baldrick Buckle from England.


Countess Danner and her Children.
Her real name was Louise Rasmussen.
She was born in 1815 and died in 1874.
She was the mistress of King Frederik VII.
This sculpture is made by Helena Bangert from Holland.


Karen Blixen and the African Farm.
The Danish author Karen Blixen was born in 1885. She died in 1962.
This sculpture is made by Charlotte Koster from Holland.


The Free Town of Christiania.
This sculpture is made by Michel Dekok from Holland and Portugal.

Theme:
The Great Danes:
History, fiction and myths


A Free Denmark. This sculpture is a reference to the resistance movement that fought against the German occupation during World War Two.


The Hero: Knud Rasmussen.
The arctic explorer Knud Rasmussen was born in 1879 and died in 1933.
After his death, his house in Hundested was turned into a museum.
The sculpture is the work of Bouke Atema from Germany.


The Guardians of Denmark.
The most famous guardian is the legendary figure Holger Danske.
This sculpture is made by Eda Kaytan from Turkey.


To Be or Not to Be: a reference to the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare.
This sculpture is made by Radovan Zivny from the Check republic.


Best friends: the cartoon character Rasmus Klump and his friends.
This sculpture is made by Marielle Heesels from Holland and Michela Ciappini from Italy.


Gunner "Nu" Hansen.
The legendary sports reporter was born in 1905. He died in 1993.
This sculpture is made by Radovan Zivny.


Kim Larsen.
The famous rock musician was born in 1945.
This sculpture is made by Baldrick Buckle.


The Olsen Gang, a fictional trio of small time criminals.
The first of thirteen movies about the Olsen Gang was released in 1968.
This sculpture is made by Eda Kaytan.


Jorn Utzon and the Sydney Opera House.
The Danish architect Jorn Utzon was born in 1918. He died in 2008.
The Sydney Opera House (designed by him) was officially opened in 1973.


Simon Spies.
The famous and controversial millionaire was born in 1921. He died in 1984.


The Little Mermaind.
The fairytale about the little mermaid was first published in 1837.


H. C. Andersen (1805-1875).
He is the author of "The Little Mermaid" and many other fairytales.
